- Finance Minister Bill English spoke of the Government's support for financial education, saying it will result in citizens who are able to make better financial decisions to help themselves and others.
- Dr Annamaria Lusardi, Professor of Economics, Dartmouth College, looks at how much people know about wealth and money, the gaps in people’s financial knowledge, what’s working in financial education and what’s next.
- Wendy van den Hende, Chief Executive of pfeg, spoke about the UK experience of getting financial education into schools, why the UK is investing so heavily in it, what the impact has been and what New Zealand can learn.
- Diana Crossan, Retirement Commissioner, assessed progress against the National Strategy for Financial Literacy and looked ahead to the next steps in New Zealand and internationally.
The summit also heard from a number of commentators, who spoke from a variety of perspectives. They were:
- Suzanne Snively, Partner, Pricewaterhouse Coopers commented on the positive impact of financial literacy on wellbeing and the challenges of improving literacy.
- Andrew Jackson, Deputy Secretary Competition, Trade and Investment, Ministry of Economic Development, raised questions about how to change culture and behaviour.
- Karen Sewell, Secretary for Education, discussed the opportunities for financial education in the New Zealand school system.
- Donna Dentice, Chief Executive, Young Enterprise Trust, compared the experience of financial education in schools in New Zealand and the UK.
- Paul Brock, Kiwibank Acting Chief Executive, summed up discussion at Financial Literacy 09 with his comments at the end of the day.
